Thinning Hair Symptom for Young Women
Thinning hair in women is more common than you may think. It has been estimated that 40% of women suffer from hair loss at some point in their lives. While men have a higher percentage of hair loss, at approximately 60%, there is a significant chance for women and thinning hair.
Female hair thinning is a complicated issue. It is possible to have some of the same influences for hair loss as men. Diet and infection can affect hair growth in both genders. A doctor will need to treat an infection that causes female hair thinning.
Thinning hair in young women can be a result of hormonal changes. Many times you will see a woman with thick, lustrous hair during her pregnancy. She practically glows with luster. Shortly after delivering, her hair may come out dramatically, leaving her hair thin and unmanageable. This is just one example of how pregnancy and other factors can cause hormonal changes that affect the thickness of hair in a woman.
You can regrow thinning hair with proper care. Be careful not to wear tight pony tails, pig tails, or corn rows, as these can damage the hair and inhibit proper hair growth. Use products that cleanse and moisturize your scalp. Certainly make sure that your diet is conducive to producing beautiful hair, eyelashes, and fingernails. Vitamins and minerals will not only protect your overall health, but will give your hair and skin a boost.
Thinning hair in women is treatable. While female hair thinning can be unnerving, it is not insurmountable. Take care of yourself, and seek the advice of a specialist if you need to.

Hi my name is amanda i am 15 years old and i have hair breakage and thinning. my hiar grows to a certain point and wont grow any farthur. on the sides it will break off too. i have been to the doctor for it and they checked my thyroid but other wise they dont know what could be. my thyroid was fine. i take a daily prenatel vitamin because all of the stuff i need is in it, although i am not pregnant, is that bad for me? i am also taking birth control, Nortrel. would that have anything to do with my hair thinning? and also to add on to it, my dad lost all of his hair from the age 15 to 19 by his 19th birthday he was completely bald, do you think that could happen to me? i have stress almost two years about my hair. I ocasionaly use a hiar straitener and use hair products such as a kids hair detangular, and some leave in conditioner. i get my hair trimmed about once every 2 months.. do you have any sugestions?

I have the same problem but I am 18 almost 19 years old. I started noticing my hair thinning two years ago and I thought it was no big deal, but now I have very very fine hair, where as three years ago I had very thick hair. Like you I went to the doctor to have them check my thyroid and they said it was fine, and they took blood tests and couldn’t figure out what is causing it. I saw this advertisement for a product called Nu Hair and I decided to by it because it had very good ratings and one of my aunts used it and got good results. Your best bet is to try that product and see how it works
Good Luck

in response to the first gorl, one of the affects of taking birth control is thinning hair. i was going to go on it but since hair thinning is hereditary from my mom, and i already see it getting thin and im only 15. i decided i better not and just try not to use tons of hair products or stylers with heat like the flat iron or hairdryer. also, diet is extremely crucial. eating protein helps since thats what hair is made of.

I am 19 and my hair has drastically thinned at the crown in the last 2 months. I had surgery in July, and feel that that may be the only cause. It really gets me down because I used to have beautiful healthy long hair. Now I need to cut it all off. The whole thing has been very stressful, but I’m glad I’m not the only one dealing with this type of problem. I just hope that our hair will grow back…

Hi,
You should certainly see a dr due to any underlying health issues. Assuming nothing is out of the ordinary health wise, I would suggest using Coconut or Sesame Oil on your scalp at least twice a week before your shower. As in, massage your head with the oil and leave it in for at least 20 minutes. There is another hair commonly used (in some circles) for thinning and greying hair, it is called Bhringraj oil. Its hard to find but supposedly works Very well. Lisa

Michele @ 2:25 pm:
i’m a bit older than you girls, but i am having a problem with my hair too. seems to me that my hair is finer than it ever used to be, and also seems to be thinning on top. sometimes i cannot believe how much hair winds up in the shower drain after i shower! it is becoming more and more unmanageable, which is depressing because i used to have long beautiful curls…now it can’t decide if it wants to be curly, wavy, frizzy, straight…seems like it is all of those in different spots on my head. i am extremely tempted to just shave my head and be done with it because i absolutely HATE trying to style my hair anymore.
like some of you, i went to the doctor to have my thyroid checked (i was also having other symptoms of a thyroid condition). the doctor told me my thyroid was fine. i made him check it again because i didn’t believe him. he checked it again, and guess what? i have a thyroid condition! (mine is underactive.) so, i would suggest that maybe you girls have your thyroids checked again…maybe something was missed on the original test…??? also, the med i am on for my thyroid has a possible side effect of hair loss…so that is NOT helping my hair problem, but hopefully it IS helping my thyroid!

abc @ 12:13 am:
Hey,
im 15 and yeah, i have thinning hair too. i used to have really reallly thick hair, but then it started falling out A LOT. in the shower, at least 50 hair would fall out, then, i’d get out of the shower, another 60 would fall out by combing it and when it dried, about another 110 hairs fell out throughout the day..maybe more. I was so concerned. So I went to my doctor and they checked my thyroid, and the tests concluded that my thyroid was fuctioning properly. So, this left me wondering, WHY AM I LOSING MY HAIR?!? Anyway, I took another blood test checking for any iron deficiencies. Turns out, I had very low iron. Now, i take iron supplements, and my hair loss and stopped dramatically. Now, i lose about 2-5 hairs in the shower, and maybe 5-10 through combing. Which I believe is normal, yes? I also noticed that taking a multi-vitamin and protein shakes helped as well, but it did not make as dramatic improvement as my iron supplements. But if u are experiencing hair thinning, i would recommend taking a blood test, because if you have normal iron levels in your blood, it could be dangerous to take supplements and this could even make your hair loss increase! good luck to all of you and i know its so hard (especially if you are a girl) to go through this. Trust me, i know first hand. But please please please stay strong. You will get through, and eventually it will stop! Keep hope!

ABC thanks for giving me hope:) i have hyperthyrodism so i’m assuming that’s the cause of my hair thinning, it’s horrible i get so self conscience…i have to wear my hair a certain way so the loss of hair doesn’t show. do you guys think the hiar thinning will stop once my thyroid is cleared up and will my hair actually grow back?!:(

Christina @ 11:13 pm:
I am 20 years old and have lost about 50% of my hair over the past 4 years. I have been checked for low iron and thyroid problems multiple times and the doctors told me there is nothing wrong with either of these things. So, I did research on my own and found that hormone levels can lead to hair loss in women. I am also on the birth control pill which might be making things worse. I have a doctors appointment in a few weeks and I am going to get my hormone levels tested so hopefully that is what the problem is. An excessive amount of a hormone called DHT in a woman’s system can also lead to hair loss and your doctor should be able to test for this. There is also something called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome that can affect young women and one of the main symptoms of this is dramatic hair loss. So, hopefully some of this information has helped because I know how frustrating it is to lose your hair and have doctors tell you there is nothing wrong with you. I would just recommend doing research on your own and taking it in to show your doctor, and not taking no for an answer. Hopefully my hair loss mystery will be solved soon.

I am 17. I used to have really thick hair but over the last few years my hair has gone very thin and is breaking off and falling out at the sides. I have been to see my doctor - she checked my thyroid and iron levels and found nothing wrong. So she referred me to a specialist for further information. When I went to see him he said we needed to do nothing for a few months so he could see how my hair changed. But I can’t leave it another few months, I’m terrified, its making me even more stressed which I have found out is a cause of hair loss already, and I don’t know how to make my hair grow back. I’ve looked into diet, could it be that?
October 2, 2009
annie @ 12:03 pm:
I’m 20 and like many of you, I used to have very thick, long hair as a kid. I went through a traumatic, emotional time around age 13. I believe that’s when my hair started falling out. Over the years, my hair has gotten noticeably thinner. I miss not having to worry about how my hair looks. I just don’t think a young girl should have to worry about something like this, and its caused me a lot of stress and to be honest. It might also be my diet that’s keeping this problem going. So I’m going to try to eat some iron supplements as someone suggested, and keep a more healthy, balanced diet, as well as use some natural treatments on my hair to make it healthier. Wish me luck! And I hope anyone with this strangely depressing problem finds a solution as well.

I am 27 and have diffusely thinning hair all over which started when I was 21. They diagnosed me with hypothyroid after I insisted them to repeat my TSH b/c I had all the symptoms. 6 yrs later, I’m still suffering, wear a wig, and have social anxiety over the whole thing. I am in therapy, and it really stinks. But, I have a boyfriend who supports me thru all this, and will overcome the shame I feel one day and just get on with my life. It’s nice to see others to relate to! Hang tight gals=)Makes us stronger…

I’m so glad I found this website and was able to read that others go through this same thing! I am 24 and noticed when I was 17 that my hair was a lot thinner that it used to be…I had just come back from living in a foreign country for a year and thought maybe it was because of my diet, but my hair has continued to thin over the years, causing me to stress out majorly over it! Some days I am fine, but others (especially when I am pms-ing) I get such a knot in my stomach when I am looking at my hair….you all had good suggestions though and it makes me feel better that I am not the only one going through this!

@peace @ 12:34 pm:
I’m 25 and had thinning hair too! It all started when I began bleaching and heat- styling my hair early in high school. I noticed ample amounts of breakage and my hair became limp and brittle. I didn’t think much of it until I stopped bleaching and just dyed my hair a shade darker than my natural color. I did this through college and still, my hair was thinning. I then switched from chemical dyes to henna - still, no change. Therefore, I started focusing on treating my health. After graduating college, I realized what an unhealthy lifestyle I was living; drinking heavily, smoking, no exercise, hardly any sleep, and massive amounts of stress from school and weight gain. I’ve recently lost close to 45 lbs and have noticed a slight change in my hair. The ends of my strands are still feathery and break easily but with conditioning dyes and good products, my roots are becoming very healthy! I highly recommend sulfate-free products. L’Oréal has just developed an entire line that is very affordable and available almost everywhere. I have also stopped washing my hair every day - I know - some will think “ewwwww” but it’s really fine. If you wash your hair every day, your scalp becomes dry and produces more oil than you need. This is why some have an excessively oily scalp with dry hair. So…wash your hair every 2-3 days and your scalp will stop overproducing oil. If you are of Mediterranean descent, like myself, your skin and hair is naturally oily; pick up a product like the All-nighter hair powder (http://www.theall-nighter.com/index.html). It comes in a ton of colors and does a great job of absorbing excess oils. PLUS – it gives your hair amazing volume. I have tried coconut milk and other miscellaneous oils – yuck! They left my hair smelling gross and feeling oilier than before. They did nothing to thicken or promote growth of my hair. Sorry, I wish it worked for me! I have also began a vitamin regime and it has helped my hair and nails immensity. I take 2500 mcg of Biotin and 1 multivitamin a day. Anywhoo – I encourage all of you to love yourself for who you are – thin hair and all! My routine has not given me hair like Kim Kardashian because some of her hair is fake. I love extensions, don’t get me wrong, but if you love yourself, you’ll take care of yourself and a healthy you is beautiful!
Finding this site was so reassuring! Thanks to all who shared their stories. I only hope I helped…

I’m 20 years old and over the past month I’ve been experiencing a lot of hair loss, so much that I can see my scalp now, where there used to be thick hair. Like Laine said it gives me a knot in my stomach when looking at my hair, and I have gotten to the point where I am nervous to even touch, style or wash it for fear of it falling out. Every time I shower I lose about 70 hairs and my hair is about half of the thickness it was a month ago. I am really scared, but am going to make a doctors appointment to get my blood levels checked, Im just glad to know that there are girls like me out there, and that I’m not alone. Thanks for that girls!

Im 19, and my family is known for our thick, curly hair. Ive always had thick thick hair, that everytime i got it cut it would need to be thinned out. About 2 months ago i noticed alot of my hair wass comming out in the shower and when i brushed it, i didnt think much of it untill it kept happening. It wasent just a few hairs, it was a bunch at once all the time. Now the back top part of my head is extremly thin. It makes me feel like i barely have hair there anymore. Now its not just falling out but its corse and dry and breaking apart. ive always loved my hair, and i want it back. Ihave no idea why this is happening and im scared to death to get a blood test done to possibly rule out a thyroid problem. Any other suggestions as to why this is happeneing to me?

I’m 21 years old and use to have thick beautiful hair. It has thinned out immensely over the past 6 years. I went to the nurse practitioner and found out that I had polycystic ovarian syndrome. It sucks really bad and the side effects are every girls nightmare… Irregular periods, weight gain, acne, hair thinning, infertility, increased facial hair fatigue, and insomnia. If you have a few of these symptoms go get it checked out! The regular doctors will just throw you on a birth control. I recommend you go see a specialist if you do have this syndrome or an imbalance of hormones. They have all natural alternatives that I am hopefully going to try this upcoming year. A lot of girls have this problem and don’t know it until they try to get pregnant and can’t! Go get yourself checked out if you have the symptoms for PCOS! Protect yourself from further problems while you can. Hope this helps! Good luck to all on their struggle with hair loss. And just know that a lot of us are in this together.

I’m 15 and I’m really worried about how thin my hair is getting…I’ve never had LOTS of hair but it is very curly and poofy - I guess you can’t really tell how thin it is until I tie it up. It’s also pretty dry which might make it more brittle or something BUT I think the main reason it’s got so thin is that…I pull it out
I break bits off whenever I’m stressed which is gonna be especially bad in the next couple of years since I have GCSEs, then AS, then A2, then university…I dunno why I do it but I kinda get this urge to pull it out and I really like the sound it makes when it snaps (I know this sounds REALLY weird but it’s hard to explain) I don’t know what to do any ideas??

i’m 18 kinda lost and confused as to why exactly my hair has appeared thin, and all of a sudden. I didnt think anything really as to why I found long dark strips of hair masking the bottom of the bath each time Ide showered. Now my hair doesnt even block the plug hole. It used to be thick and luscious how I liked it, i never really uinderstood how people could wish for thinner finer hair. my hair feels light and about 60% thinner. Somebody heeeelp lol. xxx

I am 19 and my hair loss just started about two months ago. I have been going through some stressful life changes, but overall don’t feel like that is anything to cause my hair to fall out. I dread showering or brushing my hair and don’t style it anymore. I can’t stop thinking about my hair and look at other girls hair with envy. I went to the doctor last week and am getting blood tests done this week, so hopefully that will help. But I am glad to read other peoples stories and at least know that I am not alone.

**please readdd!! :) @ 4:00 am:
Hey girls I’ve got the same problem
my hair was thinning since I started high school, now I’m 23 its really thin now and I can hardly style my hair the way I want to. I’ve never really done much about it but I’ve looked into this problem for sooo many years I always find the same answers. First get a couple of blood tests done especially to check your iron levels, if ur doctor wants you to start treatment then give it a try, but there are always other options too. I’m not keen on doctors as they usually prescribe the standard old things even though everyone is different and there could be other underlying problems. I think quite a few of u may have Alopecia (not sure of the spelling), its really common. There’s this shop which has stores around the country called Dr & Herbs who sell a range of products for hair thinning. I tried it about 3 years ago for 3 or 4 months and it stopped my hair falling out but I ran out of money n cudnt be bothered to start it all over again :p. They do student discount which was good. It’s also good to get a head massage to stimulate circulation in ur scalp, and some oils that are good to massage with are castor oil (heated up for about 10-15 seconds in a microwave, promotes strong roots and stimulate growth), almond oil (hair nourishment), jasmine oil. In indian culture a mix of castor oil, soya oil, almond oil and olive oil (same amounts of each) is meant to be really good. Leave in your hair for MAX 2 hours! So many people have told me it will have reverse effects esp if left on overnight. It’s best to buy these from asian shops especially indian shops as they are sold as pure oils not mixed with chemicals or rubbish like u get from supermarkets like tesco etc. And they are a lot cheaper in indian shops e.g. in Southall. Warm the oil up a little then give urself a good head massage or even ask someone else to do it for u. Its also worth checking out an Ayurveda (herbal) clinic I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about those so I went to my nearest one and I’ve started treatment, its £40 a month, I really hope it works!! The doctor said it will take time but for some reason I trust him, he was very friendly and confident and enjoys what he does. Also check out the London centre of Trichology, they have a website google it they’ve got info on there too. If any of you try these treatments I really hope they work for you and that ur problems are temporary, I’ve been dealing with my hair problem for over ten years n I’m so worried n sick n tired of waiting for my hair to grow back to how beautiful it was all those years ago. If anyone who is near harrow, northwest london the herbal clinic’s number is 02088638370, although the doctor does go up to leicester sometimes. Good luck girls x

Beatrice @ 2:32 am:
Hi Guys,
I have been experiencing hair loss since about 4 years ago. I used to have pretty full hair and shiny and then I got a bad bleach in my head in a salon and it all started. Then 2 years after it had dramatically improved (not falling so much per day) and I got married and pregnant. Then my hair got full again and even thick like before, I was really happy. But threes months after birth it started falling again, not like before but it was sad. I really believed maybe Id get healthier follicles again but I guess the bleach might have damaged them badly. Nowadays, I did a blood test to check hormones and iron levels(ferritin)and hormones are fine but I got glad to learn that my ferritin levels were like 13, which is really low. My gyn said its impossible to have good hair if is so low. I bought iron supplement and since I started I can tell when I shower and vacuum cleaning the house I am loosing much less. Also its important to keep a good diet adding lot of vitamin rich food. But I have did some research and trying to lose weight can really affect hair growth in women because you tend to be under daily needs. Well I never had weight problem but I can tell months ago I wasn’t eating that much and my hair was definitely weaker than now. I also feel that conditioner is bad for scalp cause makes it oily but some people believe oil is good so I really cant tell, personal opinion. So girls, don’t lose your strength and hope! Be happy, no stress and watch your daily needs and warning, do a blood test first to check if ferritin levels are low before starting iron supplements because otherwise its toxic for your body and if you don’t need it you can actually lose hair as a side effect of excess iron levels. Take it easy girls! XOXOXO
Beatrice @ 2:43 am:
Hello Helpless!
At your age its possible to experience hair loss if your hormones levels have changed (start having periods maybe?). It’s really important that you go to a gynecologist and do some blood tests, don’t be afraid of telling him what’s happening, it’s important that you get checked. I remember I had my first period at 13 and had hair loss at the time that stopped 3-6 months after and hair got full again, so maybe it can be happening the same with you, I have friends that had same effect when they had the first. So if you need to talk to your mom about it to schedule a gyn or you can schedule yourself and go with a friend if you feel reserved about it, but seek help and relax, I believe its not gonna last. Ask him for a blood test for ferritin levels. A big hug!

Lisa @ 12:31 pm:
Most doctors seem to test ONLY for TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) and not the T3/T4 levels and especially thyroid antibodies. The presence of antibodies indicates an auto-immune disease that prevents your body from turning T3 to T4. Your body NEEDS T4. Most doctors also ONLY prescribe synthroid, or a synthetic T3, which many studies have shown help less than half of the people. Ask for a T3-T4 compound. I was going literally going nuts - low thyroid affects EVERYTHING and besides the obvious hair loss (also major loss of eyebrow - outer edge) can cause depression and mood changes. Since I’ve been on armour (a natural thyroid compound) I feel fantastic, night and day difference. Change doctors if you have to and they don’t listen.

I am 19, my hair has always been thin, but in the last month or so it has gotten much worse. I have long hair and it is parted to the side, recently I can barely part it to the side because my scalp shows. I cant put it in any type of straight back stlye because in the front sides my scalp shows too much. Any suggestions on a hair style for long thinning hair, Im not ready to cut it yet and would love some ideas on what I can do to it besides a side braid and leaving it down.
Samantha @ 9:42 am:
Hi everyone - I have a question. I’m 20 years old and my thinning hair is really unnerving. I had always had quite thick hair, but in October 2010 I dyed it - I don’t know if that had anything to do with it, since that was only the second time in my life that I’d dyed it, and the first time nothing like that happened - and noticed nothing wrong until December, when my mother pointed out how thin it was. I’m worried. How could my hair have gone from being so thick, to so thin, in so little time? And what can I do to help it grow and become healthier?
Any help is really, really appreciated. I’m a little scared.

I’ve stopped by this site before and read some comments. It’s comforting to know that I’m not the only one losing hair. I’m 20 years old and started noticing my hair thinning a year ago. Since then, I haven’t been comfortable leaving my hair down because my scalp shows too much and my part is getting thicker, which is a shame, because I used to love rolling out of bed and going to class without having anything to worry about. I still have a semi-full head of hair in the sense that there are no bald patches, but there are areas where the scalp peeks through pretty obviously sometimes. I used to have wavy hair that covered my whole head, and since my hair started thinning more, I decided to go to my doctor, who recommended me to an endocrinologist, who then told me to go to a dermatologist. My blood tests showed elevated DHEA-S and free testosterone, which prompted my endocrinologist to prescribe me Yaz, because it’s a testosterone antagonist. A second blood test showed that my testosterone levels had gone back down to normal levels while my DHEA-S was still in the upper-normal range. My dermatologist then prescribed me 50mg spironolactone. I’m hoping that this will soon end my agony and help my hair regrow now that my hormones won’t be an issue. My heart definitely goes out to everyone of you who’s had to deal with anything like this, as I know I spent nights crying to my mom over the phone over this. Now that I’ve accepted what it is, I’m just wondering, does anyone else have a similar experience like this regarding their androgenic hormones?

Hi everyone!
I’m 15 years old and my hair began to thin at the end of this summer. During the summer, I went through a very stressful period for about a month, and I began to see excessive amounts of hair falling out in the shower. Before that, I also used to straighten my hair almost everyday for 2 years. This year, I stopped straightening it as often as I used to because I thought maybe the thinning had to do with this. My hair was never extremely thick, but it was very smooth and luscious and it would dry naturally that way as well. Now, it’s all broken off at the crown of my head and basicly on my whole head as well. When it dries naturally, its now extremely frizzy. It gets me so jealous and depressed to see all of my friends with their thick silky long hair, I really want my old hair back. It’s been a year now and I’m still trying to figure out the problem…It was probably the fact that I straightened it too much…but could it be something else? Perhaps a health problem? I’ve had blood tests this year before and I’ve gone to see a dermatologist but they told me nothing was wrong. I’ve also tried many products for thinning hair such as Nioxin shampoo and it didn’t seem to work. I feel so ugly now and I don’t feel as pretty as I used to be…..I’m concerned it’ll never grow back to the way it used to be…is it possible it will? I read almost everyone of these posts and the suggestions seem helpful, but does anyone have any suggestions for me in specific? thank you so much!!!

I’m 23 and it seems like my hair has gotten thinner within the past year or so. I though it might have been because I was taking the birth control tri-sprintec (generic for ortho-tri-cyclen) so I got off of it recently (I had been on it for a year and I was on yasmin before that). I am on my third month of sronyx. My doctor told me that most of the women who took it didn’t have any complaints. I can’t really tell much of a difference in my hair yet. I went to a dermatologist almost a month ago for a scalp problem I was having. I have been getting red bumps mostly around my hairline that look like pimples. He looked at me for what seemed like a few seconds and told me I have seborrheic dermatitis. He gave me loprox shampoo and doxycycline. The doxycycline cleared up whatever acne I got from changing birth control and I think the loprox cleared up my scalp. I use it every other day and I use head and shoulders in between. I have washed my hair every day for a long time because it itches when I don’t or it looks greasy. I don’t know if I should stop washing every day for the health of my hair. I just don’t really want to stop washing every day. Anyway, I don’t have bumps anymore. I’m still worried about the thickness of my hair so sometime this week I’m getting a blood test. I’m also going to try to change my diet because I don’t eat that well. I know I don’t get enough protein. My nails have been brittle for a long time but it never bothered me that much. I would just get fake nails. Now that my hair seems thinner, I’m freaking out. There are so many reasons why my hair could be thinner…I just hope I can figure it before it gets worse.

I’m 26 years old and my hair started thinning about 2 years ago. I’m at a loss with what to do as my blood tests have come back normal and there is no heriditary of it. When my hair is wet, you can see my scalp and it really gets me down! I noticed that you posted your comment a year ago, have you noticed any difference to your hair?!

Aside from getting your thyriod checked, also go to a dermatologist. Eczema on the scalp can cause hair loss, but can be treated. My mom was treated for both hypothyroidism and eczema on her scalp, and her hair is FINALLY growing back in.

Pokerff @ 10:50 am:
I’ve suffered from significant hair thinning in the past two years and being a female in my early twenties, I naturally became very self-conscious. I used to lose handfuls of hair after washing with shampoo and conditioner but since my hair tends to get oily very quickly, I had to wash it everyday. After adapting a strict vitamin regime and cutting down stress, the extreme shedding subsided…but for some reason, no matter what high quality strengthening/organic/expensive product I used, my hair was so limp, thin, and grew so slowly that I kept it short, thinking I’ll never have long yet healthy looking hair again.
Oily scalps are also prone to hair loss/thinning so I needed a gentle but effective cleansing and clarifying shampoo. I must say Made from Earth Tea & Protein Shampoo (which is organic) has SAVED my hair. I used to have the longest, thickest head of hair just 2-3 years ago and this shampoo has stopped the thinning/shedding & makes my hair so much thicker that it might just look like it used to in a few months…

I’m 18, I’ve always had thin hair but 2 years ago I noticed my hair have gotten really thin. After I shower my scalp is really noticable. When it’s really windy my bald spots show
so I hate going out. It might be hereditary because my mom has really thin hair also but it makes me sad it had to thin out so much in the prime of my life. I should be having fun, exploring, meeting new people, and dating. My hair loss stops me from enjoying all these things, my hairloss particially was the reason I decided to skip my first year of college (yeah it’s that bad). I really hope there’s a cure soon cuz this really does put a damper in our lives, especially being girls. We’ve been programmed to see our hair as our beauty enhancer and once we see we’re losing it our confidence plummets down so low. Hang in there girls

Desperate girl @ 4:06 pm:
hey guys! I had and am still experiencing thinning hair problem ever since 13…I am reaching 18 soon. This stupid problem has been bothering me as I had spent lots of money trying every possible methods and even went to see a specialist and had everything tested. it costs me around $400++. it only says my iron level is a little lower than average. also, my scalp is super oily and i washed my hair everyday… i went for scalp treatment, applied minoxidil solution prescribed by the specialist, and im currently spraying this solution thats make up of leaves soaked in some type of wine to my scalp… the lady told my father that it would stimualte hair growth after 1 year. OMG!!! its been like ard 2 months for me and im in need of help. I’ve been called balding girl in my secondary school and it was the worst year of my entire life.
after reading about the hormonal problems, im beginning to wonder if my hair has to do with the start of my menstruation, as i started my period when i was 12, at the end of the year. Now im aware of DHT and PCOS… and had did quite a lot of research on the castor oil, specifically Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO)… but to my dismay, it can only be purchased online and was sold in USA… I live in singapore, and so i went to search for available shops that sells it but to no avail… JBCO is the specific treatment to hair thinning and promotes hair growth etc. Apparently, we only have castor oil in singapore and there is no exact confirmed location/outlets for me to go. I found one that sells organic products at Organic Pradise, Cuppage Plaza located at Somerset. But I need a confirmation as I do not want a wasted trip. Some readers said it sells onnly castor oil, no JBCO. Anyone who can help me? I really want to try and see if it stimulates hair growth. Thanks a lot! =)
or is there any other cost-saving and natural method for my super oily scalp. i have super oily face that has pimples and a super oily back too. T_T

I have this “hair loss” problem too. My hair used to be so thick and curly, I didn’t have to even comb it or put anything because it had shine and shape. Over the last past three years (jr.high) I been loosing hair. It didn’t matter to me at first because everyone loses hair right?(hair falls off) Until last year I lost so much hair and my hair went dull and wavy, flat and curly all over the place. I been trying to fix it by doing olive oil treatments and other kind of treatments. It’s not as thin as it used to be now but it still has no shape…it’s just not the same. I feel sooo weird complaining about hair but it’s been a dramitic change. I don’t want to use hot tools on my hair constantly to shape it. I’m only 15 and I feel like I shouldn’t be having this problemzzz :/…. I got really sick last year for months so that could be it..bt I’m not sure my hair would of changed so bad. I mean I been sick b4.

I’m 21 and I’ve been experiencing similar problems. All my life I was always complimented because my hair was very long, thick and soft. I didn’t use anything on my hair except shampoo and conditioner, Basically I’ve taken care of it well, didn’t use straighteners since my hair’s very straight. I’m afraid around last year someone jinxed it or something. I know that’s not the case but it feels like someone’s jealous stares did this, lol. My hair around the sides of my scalp used to be so active the baby hairs used to be curly all the time even thought I have straight hair. Now they are barely there! Since last year whenever I brushed my hair or showered (I shower everyday too, have to because my scalp is oily) my hair’s thinning and I think on some days I’m losing more than 100 hairs. This makes me feel depressed most of the time, I used to hold my hair and it barely fit inside my fist now doesn’t even make half of my fist. I can’t go to a doctor till October, I’m on vacation but this drives me crazy.
Can my diet be the problem I wonder? I don’t eat red meat or eggs since I was ten, and eating poultry or fish once a week tops. Maybe I have iron deficiency?

Harry @ 11:09 pm:
Hi guys,
I’ve never left a comment on a chat site before but would like to write my experiences in the hope that it may help some of you…
I’m a 25 year old English girl. At the end of 2008, while on a year out in Australia, I became seriously ill with a kidney infection. Australian doctors didn’t refer me to hospital immediately so I suffered for three weeks and eventually almost died from blood poisoning! My body temperature was at 39.6 for 2-3 weeks and this physical trauma meant that about 2 months later, I lost about 50% of my hair. It was SOOOOOO distressing! I went to an Austrlain dermatologist and he performed a scalp biopsy (ouch!) to figure out the cause. Conclusion was my illness. My eyebrows stopped needing to be plucked and my eyelashes thinned massively. Incredibly, after about 3 months, it stopped falling out and before I knew it, it had mostly grown back again. I would only lose the normal amount in the shower. I even felt comfortable enough to dye my hair dramatically! Then a couple of years later - back in January of this year (2011), my parents split up. My dad left for another woman (an evil bitch politician!) and this woman and my father’s actions caused incredible amounts of stress for me. To the point of causing bad anxiety attacks - huge surges of adrenaline and racing heart rate. This was when my hair began to fall out AGAIN. It has been falling out for 7 months now and it is causing massive upset for me. I probably pull about 50 hairs in the shower (makes me gasp when I see it in my hand). Then lots come out when brushing etc and loads more all throughout the day. My hair looks lank and lifeless. I haven’t dyed it for 19 months. It looks crap down and it looks even worse up (thanks to the visible scalp on the sides of my head). I fiddle with it more now which doesn’t help as I end up pulling it out myself! My first advice would be to keep it clean. Don’t wash it too much but if it looks greasy then the scalp shows up more easily. I have blood tests booked in soon and a follow up docs appointment but I’m pretty sure my thyroid is OK (thanks to past tests). I’m going to start taking iron supplements as I realised that since my boyfriend and I split up (thanks to my stress levels!), my diet has been terrible (basically living off coco pops!) so I know that this is seriously not helping. So my other advice would be to keep healthy, lots of vitamins, get those iron levels up and try try try to stay stress free! My doc prescribed me Propanonol to help with my stress but I don’t take it very often.
When my hair first fell out in Oz, I thought that was it, that was the end of my hair and I would have nothing left! But it DID grow back. So I do have hope for this time round…. It IS so scary though, to think that if this doesn’t stop then there will be no more hair left to fall out anymore!
Anyway, thanks for reading. Hope it’s helped in some way.
I’ll keep you updated with any changes…!
Good luck girls!

Hi guys hope this helps someone out there! my hair started falling out drastically a few months after having a baby that required special medical attention, so the stress of having a sick baby and lack of sleep all added to my hair loss. I would notice huge amounts of hair on the bathroom floor, kitchen floor, clothes that i was wearing. It made so upset because I have always had a thick full head of hair that people would compliment me on often an to go from that to being able to see scalp was horrible! It stopped growing in length too
So about 4 months ago I chose to do something about it. My hair has stopped shedding like it used to, I have tons of new hairs popping up around my temples and crown, it is overall much thicker and my hair has grown about 5cm which i cant believe!!!
Heres everything I did to save my hair and will prob continue for the rest of my life.
- Take a multivitamin (i take Source Naturals Life force)
- Take 5000mg Biotin supplement (I take Now Foods)
- Drink a glass of protein powder with soy milk every day (MRM 100% Natural protein powder)
- Take Evening Primrose Oil for hormones (I take Nordic Naturals for women)
- Take an iron supplement
- Take collagen supplement (Doctors Best)
- Use Sulphate free shampoo and do not wash everyday!!!! VIP!!!
- Try to get any stress under control
- Try to exercise at least 3 times a week
I know this list seems like a lot but I love my hair so much that I do not want to be bald by the time im 30 eek so I will keep taking these things forever! I feel overall much healthier too and my skin is much healthier too which is a bonus! i hope some of you can benefit from this xoxoxox

hi guys , i m so glad i found this site as my hair loss is really depressing me and making me skip so much activities and things to do as i m so embaressed to go out in public
as most of u , when i was 16 i had really thick hair , but suddenly it started thinning at the back of my head progressively , till my hair became really thin at the back of my head towards the nape of the neck , i went to a doc. And he ordered some blood tests and said that every thing was normal ana told me to start taking perfectil pills , they helped a little and the thinning slowed down but my hair never grew ! It was always growing slowly from the roots and breaking off severly at the tips , that it was getting shorter by time , i got hair extensions as i loved having long hair and my hair at the top and sides was still thick and normal and lived 3 years happy again , till my hair started falling out all over my scalp not only at the back of my head , my hair became dro and so brittle that whenever i touch it there are broken hair everywhere , my hair got short like 7 cm in 5 month ! And i dunno how to explain that to ppl ! And what type of hair loss do i have ? I m too desperate to go to a doc ,ana also my left temple became very thin morn than my right … Can that b thyroid ? Esecially that i have other symptoms , and did anyone s hairloss started at the nape of the neck ?

Im almost 25 yrs old. Ive been loosing hair for the past year and a half. Its like I stripped a whole layer of hair on my crown area. Under light, you can see my scalp. Its starting to progress to the sides of my head. I think it is due to the stress and damage that I was doing to my hair.
-washing it everyday
-using heat tools
-teasing
-dying it over and over again
I picked up rogaine for women, and I am hoping that it works for me. If not, I am getting a wig! I will make sure I keep everyone updated on the rogaine. fingers crossed!

Mimi @ 8:13 pm:
Hi guys, searched on google for thinning hair esp at the back and nape of the neck, and this place came up.
I’ve found alot of your posts very helpful and am going to try to tackle this problem positively.
I noticed my hair falling out a ton about 3 months after i broke my foot, which at the time cause severe stress and worry as i had to drop out of college for the year. Being a naturally anxious person anyway i believe it effected me even worse. I have yet to see a doctor about it because am worried he would say there is nothing wrong. Its just that there are so many different things it could be, that i dont know whether the one they tell me will be right. My scalp constanly feels itchy and irritated and especially where im thinning the most at the back of my head/neck. I can tell that the hairline has changed dramatically on the back right side of my head, almost like a bald patch, but gradual. because i havent done anything about this for about 10 months, which is probably a bad thing.
Ive been tested for the thyroid thingy years ago, because i find it hard to lose weight etc… and i dont have that
I also have alot of health problems already, and allergys etc.
Apparently im like on the cusp of being enemic(sp), so it could be that.
Also my entire life ive never eaten healthy, so it could be that..
I have really bad irregular periods and they are very painful, so i take something for them..
I just dont know what to say to the doctor.
This whole thing is giving me even more stress, and i worry about everything anyway. I think i have an anxiety disorder to be honest, or some form of OCD but ive never talked to anyone about it. Im never comfortable outside my house either..
Like alot of you girls i used to have the thickest hair which was straight and really healthy looking and get SO many compliments on it, and it was the only thing i liked about myself really. Now it breaks very easily and i have less than half the thickness i used to, which makes me depressed. its extremely frizzy and puffy now, and i had to cut about 6 inches off because it looked awful.
Have looked up about sulfate and they apparently can cause hair loss etc. Anyone have any reccomendations for Sulfate-free shampoos in the UK?
Have looked up about DHT blockers, but i dont understand it enough..
Ive had dandruff before and my head is itchy like that now, but its not the same flakes etc.
i also often suffer with eczema, so was wondering if this could be related. i ofen get the same itchyness on my forehead and eyebrows, so…
I’ll book for the doctors to see what they say i guess.
I guess i should eat healthy too. Any tips on good things to eat for health in general, and hair health?
Hope it works out for everyone!

I have just turned 20, by the way. Seems alot of us are at similar ages..

Hi, I’m Stephanie.
I’m seventeen years old. I’ve been noticing hair loss and thinning once I hit puberty at 11, although it really got noticeable my freshman year in high school. Now as a senior, it’s gotten bad, so I went to my doctor, who did a hormone and thyroid check and said everything is fine. Reading the above comments and seeing other girls face this problem.. It’s not fine, so my question is this.. WHAT IS GOING ON?
I have major thinning in the front side of my head, where my bangs are. And you can see my scalp. I feel so embarassed to go to school or dates.

Alice @ 5:50 am:
I am also 15 and I am really nervose about life too, so sometimes i pull on my hair, but it never seemed like that beg a deal. Until my sister (19) started having problems with her hair falling out. Like 90% of everyone elses she went to the doctor and they said she was fine. However her hair is getting really thin and my sister used to hair really thick really curly really long hair so when i say it has been dramatic understand that it is really dramatic hair thinning.
I am scared that I might have whatever she does because when i shower it always seems like a lot of hair is coming out and when i just twist it around some falls out. I used to use head and shoulders all the time because i had dry scale, but i stopped a few months ago. I do wear my hair up a lot ( i am a dancer and a full time student so i like it out of the way). I read somewhere that wearing hair pulled back very tightly can change the way it grows, but i am only 15 can this seriously be a problem i mean can my body really be having this many issues that my hair is falling out. I don’t know.
Its comforting and all to know there are other girls out there who are just as scared as me,but i wish it was easier to find more explainations and studies about hair thinning/ lose in teen or young adult woman.

Thanks for posting that info. Jane! I’m in my 20’s with this curly hair that never grows and falls off so much that I’m getting worried now. I have hypothyroid and have been on synthroid for 7 months. I thought the medication for my thyroid condition would help my hair but I see no difference and I think it might be worse than before. I have to fix my hair carefully now so to not show scalp, which is depressing
I am determined to find a solution so I am going to try your list Jane. Hope my hair will finally grow!

I’m 20 and I’ve been losing my hair since before high school. I have no idea why I’m losing hair all over my head, front, sides and back. I’ve had my blood tested and went to a dermatologists and they cant tell me why this happening. Every time i get a hair cut at a salon, which i hate id rather have my best friend do it. They keep telling my to use Nioxin shampoos but they are so expensive. SO I’m just sticking to shampoos with as little perfume and chemicals as possible to try and help my hair. Some day are better than others, but I’ve learned that i cant keeping dwelling on it. As I’m sure the stress of thinking about doesn’t help. All this sucks it is a lil comforting to know that other girls are feeling the same way as me, and i’m not the only one going through this.

I am so depressed. I am 21 years old and I noticed at 18 that my hair was thinning. My hair was always thin but not like this. People say comments like “oy I can see your scalp” or “You have a bald spot” etc. It is the most painful experience and it kills my self esteem. I am a pretty girl and people always tell me that I’m beautiful but I can’t feel pretty when I have this hair situation. I can hardly style my hair anymore because no matter what I try you can see a thick part or small bald spots or through the hair straight to the scalp. I can’t go swimming with friends because my hair looks horrible after getting wet. It’s only getting worse and more painful. I took a thyroid test and it was fine. Now a year later I just took another one and this time also a hormone test. I will find out the results to both this week. I am stressed and feel pressure in my scalp but this hair situation is only making me more stressed so its a vicious cycle. I too have to shower every day because my hair is so thin it gets oily looking or gets flatter from my pillow making it look even thinner. My scalp is very oily looking and makes the light reflect off it making my thin hair even more obvious. I’m glad to see I’m not alone, yet I’m so sad that other people are going through this as well. I know how painful it is, but remember thick hair, thin hair, or bald we are all still beautiful women and we should always remember that.

Sarah @ 10:58 am:
Girls,
I used to have extremely thick hair - it was so thick that I couldn’t stand it. About a year ago I noticed it was drastically thinner. I went and saw a naturopathic doctor. She told me my thyroid was fine but my reverse T-3 was not, my iron was fine but my iron intake was not, and my hormone levels were off. I have been on birth control for almost 8 years. I’m on my last package of birth control, taking iron supplements and DHEA to help my reverse T-3 levels.
Here are a few suggestions that have helped me along the way:
1. Stay away from gluten
2. Exercise
3. EAT HEALTHY! Eat plenty of protein and drink plenty of water
4. See a naturopathic doctor, they will never steer you in the wrong direction.
5. I’ve had suspicions about the gardasil shot - stay away from that too. That’s when it all started.
Best of luck to all of you and REMEMBER.. the more you stress, the more hair you lose. Relax and take care of your bodies.

So far it only seems to be at this point but i dont understand why its suddenly happened.
It is very embarrassing and hard to know where to turn too.

Hi everyone,
Im 18 years old and have been seeing major hair loss for a year now. When I first started noticing thinning I went to my OBGYN and gynecologist who both took blood tests and said i had normal ranges for everything and basically told me that my hair wasnt falling out and that i was basically crazy. Recently it has gotten to the point where more people are starting to notice and I am feeling very self conscious about it. I finally went to a dermatologist who said something was definitely wrong with me she just didnt know what. She put me on Biotin, Spironolactone, Iron, D, Niacine, birth control, muti vitamin, drinking protein shakes and I have to use Minoxidil. She still does not know what is wrong with me but i hope being on all of these vitamins and medications will help me grow my hair back. I never thought that this would happen to me. I love my hair and really want to see it go back to the condition it was.

@sarah: I had never thought that Gardasil would cause that but now thinking back.. i did get the Gardasil shot when this started happening because it is required for college

I’m 20 years old and I have noticed my hair thinning out since my junior year in high school, so 2 years ago. I’ve been trying vitamens, different hair products, and taking VERY good care of my hair. Or so I have thought. I’m also lactose-intolerent so, I assumed that I was defficient in something in my diet, but I still eat healthy. So I did some research and I have found that it may be that my body doesn’t respond well to gluten. It’s in alot of hair products and almost every food and may affect you either internally or externally (hair, skin, etc.) So, I’m going to try a gluten-free diet and see the results. I want my hair to grow long again like it was in highschool and to not be self-conscience all the time about it looking thin. I’m stressed out about it. I used to love my little cousins and children I babysit play with my hair, and now I’m embarrassed and won’t let them. I hope this works…..
