Thinning Hair Symptom for Young Women
Thinning hair in women is more common than you may think. It has been estimated that 40% of women suffer from hair loss at some point in their lives. While men have a higher percentage of hair loss, at approximately 60%, there is a significant chance for women and thinning hair.
Female hair thinning is a complicated issue. It is possible to have some of the same influences for hair loss as men. Diet and infection can affect hair growth in both genders. A doctor will need to treat an infection that causes female hair thinning.
Thinning hair in young women can be a result of hormonal changes. Many times you will see a woman with thick, lustrous hair during her pregnancy. She practically glows with luster. Shortly after delivering, her hair may come out dramatically, leaving her hair thin and unmanageable. This is just one example of how pregnancy and other factors can cause hormonal changes that affect the thickness of hair in a woman.
You can regrow thinning hair with proper care. Be careful not to wear tight pony tails, pig tails, or corn rows, as these can damage the hair and inhibit proper hair growth. Use products that cleanse and moisturize your scalp. Certainly make sure that your diet is conducive to producing beautiful hair, eyelashes, and fingernails. Vitamins and minerals will not only protect your overall health, but will give your hair and skin a boost.
Thinning hair in women is treatable. While female hair thinning can be unnerving, it is not insurmountable. Take care of yourself, and seek the advice of a specialist if you need to.

Hi my name is amanda i am 15 years old and i have hair breakage and thinning. my hiar grows to a certain point and wont grow any farthur. on the sides it will break off too. i have been to the doctor for it and they checked my thyroid but other wise they dont know what could be. my thyroid was fine. i take a daily prenatel vitamin because all of the stuff i need is in it, although i am not pregnant, is that bad for me? i am also taking birth control, Nortrel. would that have anything to do with my hair thinning? and also to add on to it, my dad lost all of his hair from the age 15 to 19 by his 19th birthday he was completely bald, do you think that could happen to me? i have stress almost two years about my hair. I ocasionaly use a hiar straitener and use hair products such as a kids hair detangular, and some leave in conditioner. i get my hair trimmed about once every 2 months.. do you have any sugestions?

I have the same problem but I am 18 almost 19 years old. I started noticing my hair thinning two years ago and I thought it was no big deal, but now I have very very fine hair, where as three years ago I had very thick hair. Like you I went to the doctor to have them check my thyroid and they said it was fine, and they took blood tests and couldn’t figure out what is causing it. I saw this advertisement for a product called Nu Hair and I decided to by it because it had very good ratings and one of my aunts used it and got good results. Your best bet is to try that product and see how it works
Good Luck

in response to the first gorl, one of the affects of taking birth control is thinning hair. i was going to go on it but since hair thinning is hereditary from my mom, and i already see it getting thin and im only 15. i decided i better not and just try not to use tons of hair products or stylers with heat like the flat iron or hairdryer. also, diet is extremely crucial. eating protein helps since thats what hair is made of.

I am 19 and my hair has drastically thinned at the crown in the last 2 months. I had surgery in July, and feel that that may be the only cause. It really gets me down because I used to have beautiful healthy long hair. Now I need to cut it all off. The whole thing has been very stressful, but I’m glad I’m not the only one dealing with this type of problem. I just hope that our hair will grow back…

Hi,
You should certainly see a dr due to any underlying health issues. Assuming nothing is out of the ordinary health wise, I would suggest using Coconut or Sesame Oil on your scalp at least twice a week before your shower. As in, massage your head with the oil and leave it in for at least 20 minutes. There is another hair commonly used (in some circles) for thinning and greying hair, it is called Bhringraj oil. Its hard to find but supposedly works Very well. Lisa

i’m a bit older than you girls, but i am having a problem with my hair too. seems to me that my hair is finer than it ever used to be, and also seems to be thinning on top. sometimes i cannot believe how much hair winds up in the shower drain after i shower! it is becoming more and more unmanageable, which is depressing because i used to have long beautiful curls…now it can’t decide if it wants to be curly, wavy, frizzy, straight…seems like it is all of those in different spots on my head. i am extremely tempted to just shave my head and be done with it because i absolutely HATE trying to style my hair anymore.
like some of you, i went to the doctor to have my thyroid checked (i was also having other symptoms of a thyroid condition). the doctor told me my thyroid was fine. i made him check it again because i didn’t believe him. he checked it again, and guess what? i have a thyroid condition! (mine is underactive.) so, i would suggest that maybe you girls have your thyroids checked again…maybe something was missed on the original test…??? also, the med i am on for my thyroid has a possible side effect of hair loss…so that is NOT helping my hair problem, but hopefully it IS helping my thyroid!

abc @ 12:13 am:
Hey,
im 15 and yeah, i have thinning hair too. i used to have really reallly thick hair, but then it started falling out A LOT. in the shower, at least 50 hair would fall out, then, i’d get out of the shower, another 60 would fall out by combing it and when it dried, about another 110 hairs fell out throughout the day..maybe more. I was so concerned. So I went to my doctor and they checked my thyroid, and the tests concluded that my thyroid was fuctioning properly. So, this left me wondering, WHY AM I LOSING MY HAIR?!? Anyway, I took another blood test checking for any iron deficiencies. Turns out, I had very low iron. Now, i take iron supplements, and my hair loss and stopped dramatically. Now, i lose about 2-5 hairs in the shower, and maybe 5-10 through combing. Which I believe is normal, yes? I also noticed that taking a multi-vitamin and protein shakes helped as well, but it did not make as dramatic improvement as my iron supplements. But if u are experiencing hair thinning, i would recommend taking a blood test, because if you have normal iron levels in your blood, it could be dangerous to take supplements and this could even make your hair loss increase! good luck to all of you and i know its so hard (especially if you are a girl) to go through this. Trust me, i know first hand. But please please please stay strong. You will get through, and eventually it will stop! Keep hope!

ABC thanks for giving me hope:) i have hyperthyrodism so i’m assuming that’s the cause of my hair thinning, it’s horrible i get so self conscience…i have to wear my hair a certain way so the loss of hair doesn’t show. do you guys think the hiar thinning will stop once my thyroid is cleared up and will my hair actually grow back?!:(

Christina @ 11:13 pm:
I am 20 years old and have lost about 50% of my hair over the past 4 years. I have been checked for low iron and thyroid problems multiple times and the doctors told me there is nothing wrong with either of these things. So, I did research on my own and found that hormone levels can lead to hair loss in women. I am also on the birth control pill which might be making things worse. I have a doctors appointment in a few weeks and I am going to get my hormone levels tested so hopefully that is what the problem is. An excessive amount of a hormone called DHT in a woman’s system can also lead to hair loss and your doctor should be able to test for this. There is also something called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome that can affect young women and one of the main symptoms of this is dramatic hair loss. So, hopefully some of this information has helped because I know how frustrating it is to lose your hair and have doctors tell you there is nothing wrong with you. I would just recommend doing research on your own and taking it in to show your doctor, and not taking no for an answer. Hopefully my hair loss mystery will be solved soon.

I am 17. I used to have really thick hair but over the last few years my hair has gone very thin and is breaking off and falling out at the sides. I have been to see my doctor - she checked my thyroid and iron levels and found nothing wrong. So she referred me to a specialist for further information. When I went to see him he said we needed to do nothing for a few months so he could see how my hair changed. But I can’t leave it another few months, I’m terrified, its making me even more stressed which I have found out is a cause of hair loss already, and I don’t know how to make my hair grow back. I’ve looked into diet, could it be that?
October 2, 2009
annie @ 12:03 pm:
I’m 20 and like many of you, I used to have very thick, long hair as a kid. I went through a traumatic, emotional time around age 13. I believe that’s when my hair started falling out. Over the years, my hair has gotten noticeably thinner. I miss not having to worry about how my hair looks. I just don’t think a young girl should have to worry about something like this, and its caused me a lot of stress and to be honest. It might also be my diet that’s keeping this problem going. So I’m going to try to eat some iron supplements as someone suggested, and keep a more healthy, balanced diet, as well as use some natural treatments on my hair to make it healthier. Wish me luck! And I hope anyone with this strangely depressing problem finds a solution as well.

I am 27 and have diffusely thinning hair all over which started when I was 21. They diagnosed me with hypothyroid after I insisted them to repeat my TSH b/c I had all the symptoms. 6 yrs later, I’m still suffering, wear a wig, and have social anxiety over the whole thing. I am in therapy, and it really stinks. But, I have a boyfriend who supports me thru all this, and will overcome the shame I feel one day and just get on with my life. It’s nice to see others to relate to! Hang tight gals=)Makes us stronger…

I’m so glad I found this website and was able to read that others go through this same thing! I am 24 and noticed when I was 17 that my hair was a lot thinner that it used to be…I had just come back from living in a foreign country for a year and thought maybe it was because of my diet, but my hair has continued to thin over the years, causing me to stress out majorly over it! Some days I am fine, but others (especially when I am pms-ing) I get such a knot in my stomach when I am looking at my hair….you all had good suggestions though and it makes me feel better that I am not the only one going through this!

@peace @ 12:34 pm:
I’m 25 and had thinning hair too! It all started when I began bleaching and heat- styling my hair early in high school. I noticed ample amounts of breakage and my hair became limp and brittle. I didn’t think much of it until I stopped bleaching and just dyed my hair a shade darker than my natural color. I did this through college and still, my hair was thinning. I then switched from chemical dyes to henna - still, no change. Therefore, I started focusing on treating my health. After graduating college, I realized what an unhealthy lifestyle I was living; drinking heavily, smoking, no exercise, hardly any sleep, and massive amounts of stress from school and weight gain. I’ve recently lost close to 45 lbs and have noticed a slight change in my hair. The ends of my strands are still feathery and break easily but with conditioning dyes and good products, my roots are becoming very healthy! I highly recommend sulfate-free products. L’Oréal has just developed an entire line that is very affordable and available almost everywhere. I have also stopped washing my hair every day - I know - some will think “ewwwww” but it’s really fine. If you wash your hair every day, your scalp becomes dry and produces more oil than you need. This is why some have an excessively oily scalp with dry hair. So…wash your hair every 2-3 days and your scalp will stop overproducing oil. If you are of Mediterranean descent, like myself, your skin and hair is naturally oily; pick up a product like the All-nighter hair powder (http://www.theall-nighter.com/index.html). It comes in a ton of colors and does a great job of absorbing excess oils. PLUS – it gives your hair amazing volume. I have tried coconut milk and other miscellaneous oils – yuck! They left my hair smelling gross and feeling oilier than before. They did nothing to thicken or promote growth of my hair. Sorry, I wish it worked for me! I have also began a vitamin regime and it has helped my hair and nails immensity. I take 2500 mcg of Biotin and 1 multivitamin a day. Anywhoo – I encourage all of you to love yourself for who you are – thin hair and all! My routine has not given me hair like Kim Kardashian because some of her hair is fake. I love extensions, don’t get me wrong, but if you love yourself, you’ll take care of yourself and a healthy you is beautiful!
Finding this site was so reassuring! Thanks to all who shared their stories. I only hope I helped…

I’m 20 years old and over the past month I’ve been experiencing a lot of hair loss, so much that I can see my scalp now, where there used to be thick hair. Like Laine said it gives me a knot in my stomach when looking at my hair, and I have gotten to the point where I am nervous to even touch, style or wash it for fear of it falling out. Every time I shower I lose about 70 hairs and my hair is about half of the thickness it was a month ago. I am really scared, but am going to make a doctors appointment to get my blood levels checked, Im just glad to know that there are girls like me out there, and that I’m not alone. Thanks for that girls!

Kasey @ 4:03 am:
Im 19, and my family is known for our thick, curly hair. Ive always had thick thick hair, that everytime i got it cut it would need to be thinned out. About 2 months ago i noticed alot of my hair wass comming out in the shower and when i brushed it, i didnt think much of it untill it kept happening. It wasent just a few hairs, it was a bunch at once all the time. Now the back top part of my head is extremly thin. It makes me feel like i barely have hair there anymore. Now its not just falling out but its corse and dry and breaking apart. ive always loved my hair, and i want it back. Ihave no idea why this is happening and im scared to death to get a blood test done to possibly rule out a thyroid problem. Any other suggestions as to why this is happeneing to me?

I’m 21 years old and use to have thick beautiful hair. It has thinned out immensely over the past 6 years. I went to the nurse practitioner and found out that I had polycystic ovarian syndrome. It sucks really bad and the side effects are every girls nightmare… Irregular periods, weight gain, acne, hair thinning, infertility, increased facial hair fatigue, and insomnia. If you have a few of these symptoms go get it checked out! The regular doctors will just throw you on a birth control. I recommend you go see a specialist if you do have this syndrome or an imbalance of hormones. They have all natural alternatives that I am hopefully going to try this upcoming year. A lot of girls have this problem and don’t know it until they try to get pregnant and can’t! Go get yourself checked out if you have the symptoms for PCOS! Protect yourself from further problems while you can. Hope this helps! Good luck to all on their struggle with hair loss. And just know that a lot of us are in this together.

I’m 15 and I’m really worried about how thin my hair is getting…I’ve never had LOTS of hair but it is very curly and poofy - I guess you can’t really tell how thin it is until I tie it up. It’s also pretty dry which might make it more brittle or something BUT I think the main reason it’s got so thin is that…I pull it out
I break bits off whenever I’m stressed which is gonna be especially bad in the next couple of years since I have GCSEs, then AS, then A2, then university…I dunno why I do it but I kinda get this urge to pull it out and I really like the sound it makes when it snaps (I know this sounds REALLY weird but it’s hard to explain) I don’t know what to do any ideas??

i’m 18 kinda lost and confused as to why exactly my hair has appeared thin, and all of a sudden. I didnt think anything really as to why I found long dark strips of hair masking the bottom of the bath each time Ide showered. Now my hair doesnt even block the plug hole. It used to be thick and luscious how I liked it, i never really uinderstood how people could wish for thinner finer hair. my hair feels light and about 60% thinner. Somebody heeeelp lol. xxx

I am 19 and my hair loss just started about two months ago. I have been going through some stressful life changes, but overall don’t feel like that is anything to cause my hair to fall out. I dread showering or brushing my hair and don’t style it anymore. I can’t stop thinking about my hair and look at other girls hair with envy. I went to the doctor last week and am getting blood tests done this week, so hopefully that will help. But I am glad to read other peoples stories and at least know that I am not alone.

i’m experianceing thining of hair… larg hair loss (malting like lol.) and braking of hair… this is due to my anemia… low iron levels have caused this… also possibly streiss… when my mother was about my age she moved from england to australia and this stress along with her anemia caused all her hair to fall out… so it’s a bit worrying that my’n is falling out too.

**please readdd!! :) @ 4:00 am:
Hey girls I’ve got the same problem
my hair was thinning since I started high school, now I’m 23 its really thin now and I can hardly style my hair the way I want to. I’ve never really done much about it but I’ve looked into this problem for sooo many years I always find the same answers. First get a couple of blood tests done especially to check your iron levels, if ur doctor wants you to start treatment then give it a try, but there are always other options too. I’m not keen on doctors as they usually prescribe the standard old things even though everyone is different and there could be other underlying problems. I think quite a few of u may have Alopecia (not sure of the spelling), its really common. There’s this shop which has stores around the country called Dr & Herbs who sell a range of products for hair thinning. I tried it about 3 years ago for 3 or 4 months and it stopped my hair falling out but I ran out of money n cudnt be bothered to start it all over again :p. They do student discount which was good. It’s also good to get a head massage to stimulate circulation in ur scalp, and some oils that are good to massage with are castor oil (heated up for about 10-15 seconds in a microwave, promotes strong roots and stimulate growth), almond oil (hair nourishment), jasmine oil. In indian culture a mix of castor oil, soya oil, almond oil and olive oil (same amounts of each) is meant to be really good. Leave in your hair for MAX 2 hours! So many people have told me it will have reverse effects esp if left on overnight. It’s best to buy these from asian shops especially indian shops as they are sold as pure oils not mixed with chemicals or rubbish like u get from supermarkets like tesco etc. And they are a lot cheaper in indian shops e.g. in Southall. Warm the oil up a little then give urself a good head massage or even ask someone else to do it for u. Its also worth checking out an Ayurveda (herbal) clinic I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about those so I went to my nearest one and I’ve started treatment, its £40 a month, I really hope it works!! The doctor said it will take time but for some reason I trust him, he was very friendly and confident and enjoys what he does. Also check out the London centre of Trichology, they have a website google it they’ve got info on there too. If any of you try these treatments I really hope they work for you and that ur problems are temporary, I’ve been dealing with my hair problem for over ten years n I’m so worried n sick n tired of waiting for my hair to grow back to how beautiful it was all those years ago. If anyone who is near harrow, northwest london the herbal clinic’s number is 02088638370, although the doctor does go up to leicester sometimes. Good luck girls x
